Youth career

Rainey started playing for Bonagee United at six, and was usually a central midfielder, but when he began playing for the Republic of Ireland he was used as a defender. He joined Wolves at sixteen, turning down other offers including one from Fulham. He had met Stephen Ward and Stephen Hunt, both Irish internationals, and had been impressed by Mick McCarthy, and by Molineux.

International

He has represented the Republic of Ireland regularly throughout the age groups.

Career honours

All-Ireland First Year title with St Eunan’s College 2010 (defeating Cork’s Rochestown College 2-1 in the final in Athlone). Also part of the Wolves squad that won the 2015 Bitzer Cup in Germany.

Contract

Rainey received a two-year professional contract in 2014. This had been arranged as part of the deal when he first moved over from Ireland to play full time.
