He was handed the captain's armband for the 2010-11 season and spearheaded the youngsters to the Premier Academy League Group B title and to the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup. In 2011-12, he played in all but one of the reserve team's fixtures as they won their league title.
In October 2012, Daniel had a one-month loan at Yeovil Town, making his senior debut. He returned to Villa and continued to impress in the reserve ranks, scoring three goals as the Under-19s made it all the way to the quarter-finals in the inaugural campaign of the NextGen Series. In August 2014, Johnson agreed to a three-month loan deal at Chesterfield.
