Matthew is a right back but can also cover in central defensive areas too. Earlier in his career he played as a right winger. He started out playing for Mooch Myernick Academy before joining the New York Red Bulls Academy. He spent most of 2015 with the USYNT Residency Program in Florida. Having been on trial at Manchester United numerous times, Matthew signed for the club in January 2016 from New York Red Bulls and received international clearance in March.
In 2016/17, Matthew's progress as an attacking full back with the Under-23 side was rewarded when he was included in a number of First Team squads towards the end of the season.
Following a long-term injury, Matthew returned to the Manchester United team in February 2019 but was released at the end of the 2018/19 season.
