Matthew joined Manchester United in the summer of 2012 from Reading, having previously been at Arsenal, where his two younger brothers still play. He joined Manchester United as a winger and failed to make an Under-18 appearance in his first season. However a considerable growth spurt in the summer of 2013 saw him become a key component of the side in the 2013/14 season, playing now in central midfield role. During that campaign, his energy in the middle saw him make more appearances than any other player at Under-18 level and he made his Under-21 debut too.
Matthew had to be patient in the 2014/15 season, making do with a fringe role in the Under-21 side. It was a similar story for the first half of the 2015/16 season.
Due to first team injuries, Matthew found himself named as a substitute for the home game against West Brom in the 2016/1/7 season.
Matthew joined FC Utrecht on loan for the 2017/18 season but was recalled in January 2018 and joined St Johnstone on loan for the remainder of the season.
In July 2018 Matthew joined St Mirren on loan for the 2018/19 season however St Mirren opted to terminate the loan in January 2019 and Matthew joined Crawley Town on loan for the rest of the season.
He signed for Gillingham in June 2019 having been released by Manchester United.
