Upton joined Wolves from Burton Albion aged fifteen, in 2012. He has been described as a "strong-tackling midfield player". However, when he made his debut for the U21s on 9 January 2015 it was as a central defender alongside Ashley Carter, in a match at Molineux against West Brom which finished 0-0. He has continued to appear as a central defender since.
