With his playing career over, Sellars spent a year or so as assistant manager at Chesterfield, and then became Under-18 coach at Sheffield United, where he worked with players such as Matt Lowton, Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton. In October 2009 he moved to Manchester City’s academy, where he stayed for almost five years, eventually heading up the entire academy coaching structure. His departure towards the end of the 2013/14 season is described by some sources as a sacking, but other sources suggest that he left by mutual consent after turning down an alternative position. Either way, the club were revamping their academy and Sellars left. By the start of the 2014/15 season he had arrived at Wolverhampton Wanderers, replacing Mick Halsall as U21 Head Coach.
