Youth career
Ashley was released by Birmingham City as a 16 year old and had a spell working as a painter and decorator and playing amateur football, until Wolves' academy coach Mick Halsall asked him to come in for a trial during the 2012-13 season.
On 2 February 2015 he joined League One club Chesterfield initially on a 28-day youth loan. On 18 February he made his senior debut in a league match at Scunthorpe, which Chesterfield lost 2-0. On 2 March it was announced that the loan would now run until the end of the regular season, and it was further extended when Chesterfield reached the play-offs. However, Ashley made only two appearances in total during the loan spell, despite being named man of the match in the second.
