Youth career
Matthew is a former player of Sunderland AFC which he played as a forward. He later joined Middlesbrough at Under-15 level and has played for them since playing as a right sided Centre-Back. He is a confidant defender and is good in the air.

Matthew has represented England Under-17's in the Nordics Cup back in summer 2013.
