Youth career
Sam joined Manchester United in the summer of 2011. Being born in July meant he was always a little physically behind other players in his academy year. His first season in the Academy was far from prolific but he was commended for his commitment to the team. He had fewer chances in his second season but did do well in a spell after Christmas 2012 as he became stronger.
In 2013/14 there were no opportunities for Sam in the Under-21 side but he did feature in every UEFA Youth League game, playing in a wide role. At the end of January 2014 he was loaned to Carlisle United and scored once during his time there. He was not offered a new contract at the end of 2013/14 season and was released on a free before signing for Everton.
International
Sam has represented Ireland at Under-15, Under-16, Under-17 and Under-19 levels.
