On 2 February 2015 Ashley joined League One club Chesterfield initially on a 28-day youth loan. On 18 February he made his senior debut in a league match at Scunthorpe, which Chesterfield lost 2-0. On 2 March it was announced that the loan would now run until the end of the regular season, and it was further extended when Chesterfield reached the play-offs. However, Ashley made only two appearances in total during the loan spell, despite impressing.

Contract
Carter received his first professional contract in February 2014. Just over a year later Wolves announced that they had taken up their option on a second year.
