Playing career

Gordon enjoyed an illustrious career at Villa Park, starting out as an apprentice in 1974 and going on to win the First Division title, League Cup, Super Cup and European Cup across three separate spells in the Midlands. He also played in England for Blackburn Rovers, Derby County, Wolves, Sheffield United, Bradford City, Stockport County and Burnley, while venturing further afield to Italy for a three-year spell with AS Bari. He was also capped by England on 10 occasions.

Managerial career

Cowans started his managerial career at Burnley with their reserve team before returning to Villa once again to become youth team coach. He has stepped into various roles during his 16-year coaching spell at Villa, including assisting Gerard Houllier with the first team, and most recently has taken on the job of Under-21 manager.
