Joe joined Liverpool's Academy at the age of nine and has featured regularly at Under-18 and Under-21 level both as a left-back and as a centre-back since making his Under-18 debut in 2002. He was involved in a charity match at Anfield on 29 March, 2015, holding his own against the likes of Luis Suárez and Fernando Torres. On 11 July, 2015, it was announced that he would join Liverpool's first team on their pre-season tour of Thailand, Australia and Malaysia.
