Youth career

Joe is a central midfielder who's been with Manchester United since he was 6. He's a box-to-box central midfielder who seldom wastes a pass and likes to get into the final third. He's had a very successful central midfield partnership with team-mate, Ben Pearson, for both club and country. Unfortunately, injury and illness meant he missed a lot of playing time in the Academy.

Joe started the 2013/14 season fully fit and played every minute of the UEFA Youth League campaign. Opportunities in the Under-21 side were limited until 2014 due to the size of Warren Joyce's squad, however once in the team, Joe became an important player and was almost ever-present.

Towards the end of January 2015, Joe joined Blackpool on loan for the remainder of the season but was recalled to United in March after struggling to break into the Blackpool side on a regular basis.

On 18th July 2015, Joe joined Barnsley on a 6-month loan but was recalled in mid-October due to a bout of tonsillitis.

International

Joe has represented England at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-19 levels.
