Youth career

Michael signed for Villa from hometown club Evergreen FC ahead of the start of his scholarship in June 2010 and quickly began about justifying his tag as a prolific goalscorer, finding the net on 11 occasions in 2010-11. In 2012-13, he led the line for Villa in the Under-19s and Under-21s, scoring six goals in the NextGen Series as Villa won the European crown in Como, though injury curtailed his involvement from the quarter-final stage onwards. Drennan got his first taste of senior football in the second half of the 2013-14 campaign with loan stints at Carlisle United and Portsmouth.

International

Drennan has represented the Republic of Ireland at Under-16, Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 level.
